3-Minute Thesis

February 25, 2022 12:09 PM
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a national conference in which graduate students compete in their communication skills by condensing their theses or master’s project, sometimes upwards of 90,000 words, into a 3-minute presentation using a single slide. They are evaluated based on the comprehension of their research and their ability to convey it effectively to audiences who are not knowledgeable about the subject of their presentation.

A Boy Named Russell

January 28, 2022 12:00 AM
The connections made between nurses and patients in a hospital can have an impact that lasts for years. In January of 2008, a young boy named Russell was rushed to the emergency department of Utah Valley Hospital after a sledding accident in Provo Rock Canyon. Unfortunately, despite the efforts made by the doctors and nurses, the young boy passed away. A few days after the death of her child, Russell's mother sent the ED a note expressing her gratitude for their work and her faith that Heavenly Father had a plan for her entire family, including Russell.

Be a Ray of Sunshine for Others

July 06, 2021 12:00 AM
If you have spent any time around the College of Nursing, you can likely recognize the smiling face of associate teaching professor Gaye C. Ray (AS '81, BS '82). Ray has been a professor at the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University for eight years and, in that time, solidified her reputation of being a perfect representation of her last name: a shining ray of sunshine for all she comes in contact with. The question remains, however, how does Ray maintain such a positive and cheerful attitude every day?

Becoming an FNP

March 30, 2021 12:00 AM
In 2017, Atalie Bradshaw was a regular BYU Nursing graduate, excited to apply her knowledge of "the Healers art" in her career. Since then, she has cared for thousands of people in various units, the most recent being in the Covid and Respiratory/Sepsis units at Utah Valley Hospital. Today, because of her confidence, dedication, and passion for nursing she has won the College of Nursing's 3 Minute Thesis competition where grad students present the dissertations they've worked on for the past 2 years in 3 minutes or less with one Powerpoint slide. Dr. Neil Peterson, graduate program coordinator and judge of the 3-Minute Thesis competition says, "Atalie Bradshaw's presentation stood out in a number of ways. Her topic was timely, and she made it relatable to anyone watching. Did you know that nearly 1 in 4 women will experience sexual assault in their lifetime? I didn't either. This study will inform interdisciplinary practices on identifying sexual assault and should improve sexual assault care and criminal justice outcomes for these women." Atalie's thesis is monumental because its different than previous studies on sexual assault injuries. For example, out of the eighty studies she read, the sample populations consisted of 80 to 200 people with the largest consisting of 1,000 subjects. Atalie's sample population consists of 5,400 women, increasing its validity and making it an influential study in the field of sexual assault. Faculty Spotlight: Kristen Erekson

November 10, 2022 02:24 PM
Newly-hired Assistant Teaching Professor Kristen Erekson had been around the healthcare industry her whole life. Her dad was in healthcare administration, and Ms. Erekson recalls spending time in his clinic stealing Dum-Dum suckers and becoming familiar with that environment. Additionally, her paternal grandfather was a veterinarian. She was also inspired by her aunt Tatha, who was a neonatal nurse. When she was 13, Ms. Erekson wrote a time capsule that said, “This is my plan for the future: go to high school, graduate from Ballard High School, go to Rick’s college for two years, then BYU. I plan to serve a mission when I’m 21. I'd like to be an intensive care neonatal nurse, but I'm not sure.”

Fall 2022: New Students Enjoy Orientation Dinner

September 23, 2022 03:05 PM
This semester sees 66 new undergraduates beginning at the BYU College of Nursing. They come from 17 different states in the US, with a few international students from Canada, Ecuador, and Mexico. One of the incoming students, Garett Ferrero, did not start school with nursing in mind. "I was in engineering because I really liked math in high school," he says. What helped him to change his mind, however, was interactions with nurses as well as the desire to be in a field that values human connection and interaction. Still, Garett says he was "in denial" about being interested in the medical field until his interest in nursing won out.

Student Nurses' Immunization Knowledge and Confidence

November 22, 2021 12:00 AM
Vaccines are likely the most significant public health initiative the world has ever seen outside of clean water. Vaccinations are relatively inexpensive, minimally invasive, and highly effective against deadly diseases. According to the World Health Organization, regular immunizations prevent between four and five million deaths each year.[1] Associate professor Dr. Janelle Macintosh has been working on vaccine research for over 10 years at BYU, often with Dr. Beth Luthy (BS '03, MS '05), Dr. Renea Beckstrand (AS '81, BS '83, MS '87), and several student research assistants. Dr. Macintosh teaches undergraduate and graduate classes on ethics, writing, research, and interdisciplinary connections for the honors program. This fall, she is also teaching a pediatrics course.

Student Spotlight: Melanie Watabe

November 03, 2020 12:00 AM
Our nursing school is full of students who are brilliant and kind. Melanie Watabe is one of them. The story that got her to where she is in her third semester at the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University is one that demonstrates her courage and commitment to the people she will serve. Melanie is, in fact, in her fifth year of undergrad. She's always loved the health field, and never wanted to be a nurse, but three years into the exercise and wellness major she felt very strongly that she was not where she was supposed to be. In a response to that prompting, she began exploring what it would take to start nursing school. After a lot of talks with the academic counselor to work around the excessive number of credits Melanie had already put toward graduation, Melanie headed out on her mission to Japan. Upon her return a year and a half later, she applied to the program and was accepted.
