The College of Nursing at Brigham Young University continues to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize nursing professors and students who show extraordinary compassion. After the death of Patrick Barnes at the age of 33 from complications of an autoimmune disease, the Barnes family decided to do something positive to honor him. They established DAISY an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system to thank the nurses who cared for him and to recognize exceptional nurses around the world.
Our recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty this semester is Dr. Jeanette Drake. She was nominated by Brianna Aguilera, a fifth-semester student. About Drake, Brianna said, "She goes above and beyond for her students." The first time Brianna did IVs, she had some difficulty. With Drake's help, Brianna was able to get the extra practice she needed to succeed. "I never forgot her kindness that day and will never forget the compassion she bestowed upon me as a stranger."
Drake is a teacher who goes above and beyond to help students succeed. Lindsey, a fifth-semester student, shared, "She's really charismatic and cares about each of her students." Lindsey recalled a time she was late to class, and Drake was understanding of the unusual circumstances. She added that Drake takes the time to give students in-depth feedback, especially on difficult essays. "Even if you start out as not a great writer in her ethics class, you will come out of it so much better."
Another fifth-semester student, Lida, shared, "Jeanette sets clear expectations, and she helps you each step of the way to get there." Lida stressed that Drake is genuinely interested in and cares about her students. "She also facilitates good discussions that help you learn how to apply the material."
